The Clouser
Deep Minnow Fly Pattern
The Clouser Deep Minnow was originally designed by Bob Clouser as a
baitfish imitation for smallmouth bass. It has become one of
the most recognized streamers for just that purpose.
The original was tied with buck tail and Krystal Flash, however there
are many different colors and variations that can be used to imitate
whatever type of baitfish the bass happen to be feeding on in you home
waters.
Clouser recommends in his book,
Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass in Rivers and Streams
, these color
combinations indifferent sizes and weights to cover most fishing
conditions in your area.
- All white.
- Chartreuse over white or chartreuse and yellow.
- Brown or tan.
One of the things that makes the Clouser Deep Minnow unique is the use
of weighted dumbbell eyes. This is not only to help sink the
fly but also invert the hook. This allows you to fish them on
or near the bottom with less risk of getting snagged.
The standard method for fishing them is a steady retrieve depending on
the baitfish in the area waters you are fishing. There are
other methods for fishing these and one of the best resources is from
the man himself in the book mentioned above.
Although these flies were meant to be used for smallmouth bass they are
also effective on other species of fish. I have had success
with them on panfish such as crappie and bluegill. Skip
Morris also claims that when they are tied fuller they are more
effective with largemouth bass. Many people use them when
saltwater fishing.
