Fly Fishing Journals. A
Simple Way to Make Your Next
Trip More Enjoyable.
One
piece of fishing gear I hardly ever see anglers using is fishing
journals. Many don’t realize the benefits involved with
journaling.
How would you like to know what to use
on your
favorite water hole according to weather conditions, water conditions,
and season? Well, the answer is you probably already know -
you
just failed to write it down. Remembering what worked from
one
fishing season to the next is easy if you use a fishing journal.
Imagine
how smart you’ll look when you already have a good idea of the best
tactics as soon as you hit the water. Meanwhile, your fishing buddy or
onlookers are going through their entire arsenal with no luck.
Another
benefit, besides the obvious one of tracking what works best, is some
of the memories you can look back on. I often take my son or
friends fishing with me. Some of the trips will make great
stories and memories to look back on.
Think
of the
stories and information your children and grandchildren will have when
you hand down your fishing journals. How much you decide to
exaggerate is entirely up to you.
Journals
don’t have to
be limited to information you record while on the water.
There is
plenty of other information you can add. Where was that place
I
stayed while on my last trip? Who has the best grub near the
lake? What was the name of that guide I hired a few years
back?
You
could even have a separate journal for fly tying. Record
which
flies are working and what modifications you need to make on
others. Got a fly recipe you found and would like to keep
handy –
write it in your journal.
To get an idea of
the basic information you should keep and the type of journal you
should look for read this article.
Online
Fishing JournalAs
a tool for the readers of my site I wanted to add an online fishing
journal. This free tool will actually serve two purposes.
What
I had in mind was to add a place on this site where you could register
for your own online journal. This way even if you should
happen
to misplace you journal you will still have the information available
to you by simply returning to this site.
The second
purpose of
the online journal tool is to help other readers. Because
most
fly fisherman are more than willing to help out others in need,
journals will be made public so other readers can find out what is
working for you.
Another tool I had planned on
adding is
allowing readers to add comments to your journas.
Maybe
there’s a reader who fishes the same waters as you who could lead you
to an idea you hadn’t thought of. A suggested fly, a great
lodge
or guide on their last trip, or anything else they found helpful.
This
will take me some work, so I would like to offer a survey to find out
if you, the reader, would actually be interested in online fishing
journal tool.
(Please keep in mind when voting, that
the online
fishing journal tool will be free to use. There is fishing
journal software available that can cost you anywhere from $10 to
$20. And even then if your computer crashes your information
could still be lost. Not so, if it is loaded on this site.)
Hopefully the online fishing journal tool will
be a success and I will be capable of making it a reality in the coming
weeks.

the fishing journals page and find out more about fly fishing for bass
and panfish return to the home page.
