What Fly Fishing Gear Do You Need?

After outfitting yourself with a fly fishing outfit you’re going to need to gear up with some tools to make your trip more enjoyable and effective.

A quick look around your fly shop and you’ll see so many gadgets, boxes, bags, and clothing it’s easy to get confused.

What do you need?  Are all those gadgets necessary?  What are the best options for storing tackle?

These are all questions you may be asking yourself.  I’d like to say I can answer them all for you, but I can’t.  What’s necessary or best for one may not be for another.

In the following articles I will try and give you suggestions and descriptions according to what other avid fly anglers have found helpful.

If you came here looking for information on fly rods, reels or line you'll find it on the Fly Fishing Outfit page.

Leaders and Tippet

Fly fishing leaders are what makes the connection from your fly line to your fly. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right ones.

Fly Fishing Accessories

These are the gadgets and tools you’ll come across in most any fly shop.  Some you’ll wonder how you would ever do without.  Others are just nice to have and can be added to your arsenal at a later time.

Tackle Storage

With all the time and money you put into getting geared up you’ll want to protect, organize, and have it all handy when you’re on the water.  Find out which option meets your needs.

It’s a good idea to get the basics first.  After you’ve been out on the water a few times you'll have a better idea of what other fly fishing gear you’ll want to add.  Have fun and add to your gear over time.

Fishing Waders

Many times you will need to actaully get into the water to get the best angle to cast to the fish to.  This is especially true when it comes to stream fishing.

For information on choosing a pair of fly fishing waders read this article.
