Top 6 Reasons to
Fly Fish
What’s the point in fly fishing when
you already catch fish
with your old spin rig? That’s
the
question friends asked me when I told them I was looking into fly
fishing. It’s
possibly the same question you’ve been
asked or are asking yourself right now.
I took this question to other fly
fisherman to get their
answer. The results
verified my desire
to learn. 1. The Desire to Learn Something New
One of my main reasons, along with
others who were turned on
to the sport, was that I love to learn new things.
Anything that challenges me is much more
rewarding than doing something I’ve done hundreds of times.
The learning doesn’t stop at
outfitting yourself and
learning to cast. Learn
where to fish,
what fish are eating, fish habits according to temperature, season,
location, etc.
2. The Excitement
Many other fly fisherman have said
that the sight of a fish
coming from the depths to strike their dry fly is an excitement that is
addictive. Add to
the fact the way a
bass crashes to the top of the water and bass fly fishing makes perfect
sense.
3. Add to Your Current Arsenal
Most fly fisherman started out
similar to most of us…with
either live bait or artificial lures on a spin cast rod and reel. A good majority say they
rarely go back to
their old rigs. Others
see fly fishing
as an added option.
Flies are simply too small to
effectively cast with a
regular spin rod. It’s
like trying to
cast a crappie jig with your heavy weight catfish rig.
A fly fishing outfit gives you the
option to cast these
flies when the fish seem to be picky eaters.
4. The Scenery
Fly fishing is often associated with
wading in a small,
secluded stream. The
reason is fly
fishing technique tends to be more effective in stream fishing scenario.
Fishing from a boat on a large lake
or reservoir with
friends is a good time. But
the solitude
of fishing a small stream has its place.
It’s relaxing. You
get to leave
all your troubles behind (for a few hours at least), take in some
beautiful
scenery, and if your lucky, fight a few fish.
5. Fish Your Own Flies
Most who take up fly fishing soon
decide to start making
their own flies and tackle. Nothing
is
more rewarding than catching a fish on a fly you personally made.
Fly tying also give you something to
do when you would like
to go fishing, but Mother Nature decides the weather isn’t right for it. Your very own fishing fix.
6. Because It Just Looks Cool
The last reason to fly fish is
probably the same reason you
decided to give it a try. Seeing
someone
cast out a fly line just looks cool.
Don’t deny it. The
first time you
seen it this was what you were thinking.
How the heck do you do that?
What’s your reason?
There are surely other reasons for
why you may decide take
up fly fishing but these are the main responses I got from other avid
fly
anglers.
I’d love to hear why you decided to
start fly fishing.
